Germans Fire
The Germans fire chlorine gas filled shells at the allied lines. This would be the first time gasses have been used in battle. Result is the near collapse of French lines. But Germans are unable to take advantage of the French. -
Germany Submarines
Kaiser Wilhelm suspends unrestricted submarine warfare. This was an attempt to keep the United States from entering this war. But this severely hurts Germans effort to prevent supplies reaching enemies. So the plan did not work out very well. -
First Tanks
British deploy first ever tank used in battle. This was at Delville wood. They are useful at breaking through barbed wire. Also good for clearing path for the infantry. Tanks are still a great weapon just not as good as they were intended to be. -
Letter to Mother
Never in my life have i been so glad to have many sisters and friends as i was yesterday. When i received a nice pile of mail of about 15 letters. All the letters were filled with joy and lots of news. I loved reading them, I read them over and over all all evening. Best evening i have had since i left home. -
Letter to Mother
I got to take a trip to a rather large town about 75 miles away. First time being in civilization since leaving home. Actually had some fine meals and it felt nice to sit down at an absolutely clean table. Also had a fair looking French waitress at our table. A bath with hot water up to my knees in the officers club. Completed an almost perfect night. At 7 we headed back to war again. -
Submarines are back
Germany resumes there use of there submarines. They're using them in the European waterways. This brings the United States into the war. Which makes the Germans position even worse. This leads to the eventual defeat of Germany. -
Zimmermann Telegram
British give Wilson the so called Zimmermann Telegram, a message from German Arthur Zimmermann proposing that Mexico side with Germany in case of war between Germany and the United States. In return, Germany promises to return to Mexico the "lost provinces" of Texas and much of the rest of the American Southwest. Mexico declines the offer, but the outrage at this interference in the Western pushes American public opinion to support entering the war. -

Worst trip i have ever had. Sleep wasn't even a question at this point. After an all night ride we covered about six miles. Arrived at a very pretty and fair sized French town at about seven. Sunday morning we woke up and had a really good breakfast. -

i came down from the guns to the wagon lines late night before i was to start. I was rather tired so i packed my bag and got into my blankets. The next morning i woke up at 3:40 A.M. to catch a motor truck that takes people to the only civilization town near here. It was really chilly and we were waiting for this train for about an hour. -
Germany and Russia Peace
Germans sign a peace treaty with the new Bolshevik of Russia. The treaty gives Germany land that would be Ukraine and Poland. Peace on the western front allows Germany to shift soldier to western front. Causing serious problems for French, British, and Americans. -
Battle of Cantigny
The battle of Cantigny is the first major American offensive of the war. Though they are pretty small in scale compared to the others. The Americans fight bravely. They soon go on to larger attacks against German positions. -
Letter to Mother
I have been with the battalion since we came back. The regular M.O. being sick. So far everything is alright. We are in a beautiful village. There is some nice gardens that i am in charge of. They have lettuce and beans that we want. -
Belleau Wood Ends
The battle of Belleau wood ends with final expulsion of the Germans. This marks the farthest Germans advance on Paris. The area has changed hands six times during the three week battle. This has caused nearly 10,000 American casualties.
