Assassination of Archduke
The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand is credited to be the start of World War One. He and his wife are shot by a Serbian. He is from Austria-Hungary. -
Declaring War
Austria-Hungary was infuriated. They wanted revenge. After Austria-Hungary knew that Germany would help them, they declared war on Serbia. Serbia also had allies and was getting ready for war. -
First Battle
The Germans began to march into Belgium. This would start the first battle of this war. They assaulted the city of Liege. Liege fell to the German powers. -
First Battle of Marne
This battle had many firsts. It was the first battle to use radio intercepts. It had the first automotive transport (vehicles) to move troops. It was between the French Army and the British Expeditionary Force against the Germans. -
Trench Warfare
Turkey becomes an allie of Germany. Trench warfare soon dominated as a central power war tactic. This soon became a popular and well known strategy. -
Russian Revolution
This revolution of 1917 showed the end of the Romanov family. The citizens of Russia did not want to be involved in the war. The revolution was mostly about the shortage of supplies and food for the common folk since everything was being sent to the front lines. -
Russian February Revolution
On International Women's Day, in Petrograd, Russia, many protests began. Russian troops didn't want to fire on protesters. 50 were killed in Znamenskaya Square which led to the forming of Petrograd Soviet. -
American joins in
American declared war on Germany on April 2nd. On April 4th American officially was a part of the war. Congress passed a $250 million dollar bill to prepare for the war. -
Halifax Explosion
A collision between two ships which ended with high explosions. It was between a Norwegian supply boat and a French cargo boat. It was the largest manmade explosion of its time. It left 2000 dead and 9000 injured. -
Treaty of Versailles
This was the official end of the war. The treaty was written in Paris. In the treaty, it created the League of Nations. The League of Nations was used to try and stop open warfare.
