U.S. surrender of the Bataan Peninsula on the main Philippine island of Luzon to the Japanese. Approximately 75,000 Filipino and American troops on Bataan were forced to make an arduous 65-mile march to prison camps. The marchers made the trek in intense heat and were subjected to harsh treatment by Japanese guards.

The Battle of Stalingrad was the successful Soviet defense of the city of Stalingrad (now Volgograd) in the U.S.S.R. during World War II. German troops were stationed here in order to take this prized city from Stalin, however the coming of winter ruined their plans and their unpreparedness ultimately made them lose this bloody battle.

American B-29 Bomber became the first deployed launch of an atomic bomb, dropping it on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The U.S. later dropped another bomb on Nagasaki, which resulted in Japans immediate surrender in the War as a result of this cruel new weapon.

The liberation of concentration camps around Germany happened slowly overtime. The Soviets were the first to release prisoners from the camps, followed by other European countries, then the U.S.. While there were many survivors from all the camps, many died just days after being released from being to weak to digest food or survive.
