The British attempt to liberate Tobruk, was stopped in its tracks by well-prepared defences. They eventually force the Germans to retreat and take back part of North Africa. -
Axis Invades Russia
Nazi Germany and its Axis partners, except Bulgaria, invade the Soviet Union. -
Japan bombs Pearl Harbor
Japan sends an aircraft carrier force across the Pacific to attack the U.S. fleets Pearl Harbor base. The Japaneese though they might interfere with their expansion to the South. They killed about 2400 Americans and sunk 5 of the battleships. U.S. enters the war. -
British and U.S. Invade Japan
British and US navies halt the Japanese naval advance in the central Pacific at Midway. -
Italy surrenders to Allied forces
Mussolini is striped of his power and his facist goverment collapses. Germany gets into action and tries to retake Italy resulting in failure. -
Allied forces invade France, D-Day
American, British, and Canadian forces land on the beach of France. This event was known as D-Day which was the start to a two month long battle known as the Battle of Normandy. -
Hitler Commits suicide
In his underground bunker Hitler shots himself in the head. He rarely left his bunker that had its own water supply and 18 rooms. -
V-E Day, War Ends in Europe
German troops lay down their arms and surrender. Surrender treaties are signed. After Hitler died the Nazis had no chance of winning. People all over the world rejoice at the news of the end of the war with Germany. -
Atomic bombings
Americans drop atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki killing an estimated 120,000 people in total. -
