Battle of France
A couple months after war was declared Germany moved in on France. They were able to take control of most of France of only 2 weeks of fighting. France signed a cease-fire agreement and surrendered giving up some of northern France to the Germany. -
Battle of Britain
German forces completely over ran the British as they heavily bombed Belgium and Northern France. This was fought with the "blitzkrieg" tactic and was the first ever battle fought entirely in the air. -
Pearl Harbor
Japan fighter jets attacked the American naval base at Pearl Harbor. This was a surprise attack by Japan and pushed the U.S. into joining World War II. -
Battle of Midway
This was a battle between the U.S. and Japan to follow up Pearl Harbor. It was fought in the Pacific Ocean on land, air, and sea. This was U.S. attempt to push Japan back and move up closer to their country. U.S. ended up winning this battle and regained control of the Pacific. -
Battle of Stalingrad
This fight was between Germany and the Soviet Union. Soviets were in the defense defended their transorttion route in the city of Stalingrad. A successful defense for the Soviets meant they they could keep the route and this help them out further in the war. -
D-Day
The U.S. forces landed on the beaches of Normandy. Pushed through France and Belgium, then up into Germany, with Russia going in from the east on Germany. To later finish off Germany, and make them surrender. -
Battle of Okinawa
Last battle fo the Pacific Ocean. Between Japan and U.S. this win by America help them push further into mainland and take complete control of the Pacific. -
Bombing of Hiroshima
This was not a typical battle in a war. This marks the first day that an atomic bomb has been used in war. The U.S. dropped the atomic bomb "Little Boy" on a city in Japan called Hiroshima. This was a major loss for Japan as it devastated war efforts. -
Bombing of Nagasaki
This was the last major event of WW2. The U.S. believed by dropping two atomic bombs within a short time period they would completely eliminate Japan taking them out of the war. That is exactly what happen with dropping the bomb called "Fat Man" on Nagasaki making Japan surrender.
