Germany invades Poland; France and Great Britain declare war on Germany
Stalin signed a pact with Hitler called the Nonaggression Pact, which stated that both countries would not attack each other. But, Hitler still led an attack. Great Britain and France declared war on Germany two days later. -
Japan attacks Pearl Harbor
Japanese forces attacked Pearl Harbor. General Yamamoto issued this surprise attack because "america was a dagger pointed at Japan's throat." Japan destroyed Pearl Harbor, and the next day, President Roosevelt declared war on Japan. -
Germany surrenders
The Germans launched a counter attack against D-Day, called the Battle of the Bulge. Germany was defeated, and Hitler commited suicide with Eva, his wife. That day is now known today as VE day, or Victory in Europe Day. -
Allies use atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki
The United States threatened the Japanese by dropping an atomic bomb in New Mexico.But, the Japanese did not respond,. So, the US dropped two atomic bombs on Japan. One in Hiroshima, and one in Nagasaki. Realizing what devestation the bombs had caused, the Japanese surrendered, and World War II was over. -
