Discoving Atomic Energy
In 1896 Henri Becquerel discovered that atoms the tiny particles that make up everything.Gave off energy he then soon figured out that they gave off a lot of energy. Frederick Soddy then went on to see if there was a way we could apply this to making a weapon. -
Albert Einstein
Albert Einstein writes to our president Franklin D. Roosevelt. Einstein then goes on to talk about how Uranium could be turned into a large source of energy.Meaning this energy could be used for a weapon purpose like previously thought. -
World War II start
Germany attacks Poland on September 1 1939 other European countries then feel like they have to act.Including the United States eventually.Because of the bombing on Pearl Harbor. Hitler begins on his conquest for world domination even though the people around him didn't know it. -
Roosevelt talks to Einstein
President Roosevelt talks to Einstein about developing the atomic bomb from his reasearch. Because they figured out that if you can keep splitting a Uranium atom in a chain reaction an atomic explosion would happen.Meaning massive damage to anyone who it was used on. -
Japan bombs Pearl Harbor
The Japanese took a surprise attack on the U.S on Pearl Harbor. Killing around 2,400 U.S citizens and service men. Forces the United States to enter the war. -
The Manhattan Project
The Manhattan project was top-secret in the U.S. and it started around the Pearl Harbor attacks. The Headquarters were in New York City. Basically what the project was to build the Atomic Bomb. -
Building the Atomic Bomb
The British and American scientists began to work toward building an Atomic Bomb. What they didn't realize was that Germany stopped their research because they thought they would win. Their main labratory was at Los Alamos in New Mexico. Because it was far from population and in the desert. Building the Atomic Bomb cost around $2 billlion and 129,000 people. What was odd is that few people even knew what they were working on. -
Testing the Atomic Bomb
Like before they tested the bombs in Los Alamos in New Mexico. There was two different bombs one called the little boy and the other the fat man. One was made of plutonium and the other Uranium. The first test they conducted was the Trinity Test on July 16th 1945. -
The Plan
Germany was close to defeat and Hitler had already killed himself in April. Germany then surrendered on May 8th. But America and Japan were still at war. We then had a conference after the Trinity Test to decide the next step with the Atomic Bombs. -
Bombing Hiroshima
Harry S. Truman the 33rd President of the U.S. after Roosevelt. He was pleased that the testing had went well and thought it could save many American lives and end the war. On July 21st 1945 5 days after the Trinity Test President Truman gave the okay for the use of the Atomic Bomb. Japan was given the chance to surrender but they refused. 4 major cities were chosen Kyoto,Hiroshima,Kokura, and Niigata. Kyoto was a major religious spot so it was crossed off. Then they decided to bomb Hiroshima.
