    The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
    The Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie are shot. They were assassinated by a Serbian Nationalist. The couple was visiting the city of Sarajevo. This left the people of Austria extremely unhappy.
  • The Start of the War

    The Start of the War
    Just a month after the assassination, the war was declared on Serbia. All of Europe began picking their sides. Austria found an alliance in Germany, while Serbia found an ally in Russia. Italy and the United States declared they would be neutral.
  • Christmas Day Truce

    Christmas Day Truce
    After months of fighting, the Christmas truce is unofficially called. The Germans were singing happy Christmas songs from their trenches. Both sides put their weapons down and picked up a football. Regardless of it being a one-time thing and the many disappointed officers, it was truly one of the few inspiring things to come out of the bloody war.

    U.S. Declares War
    The United States finally declares war against Germany. The country joined the Allied Powers. Despite the three years of neutrality, the U.S. felt it was their duty to join. They were led into battle by John J. Pershing.
  • Arrival at Camp

    Arrival at Camp
    John Joseph Brennan arrived at Camp Wadsworth in South Carolina. This is where he got his start; where they learned to be serious with their officials as well as become dedicated soldiers. Upon their arrival, they did lots of work such as building roads, cutting trees, and digging ditches. Also when entering this camp, Brennan takes note of the differences between the white people and the people of color.
  • First Big Holiday

    First Big Holiday
    Brennan’s first big holiday in the army was a great time for him. They had a nice dinner and entertainment. They got to have a nice relaxing day to remember and have drinks and listen to an orchestra. At the end of the night, everyone was given a job. He described it as “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.”
  • Leaving for the Sea

    Leaving for the Sea
    John leaves the camp to go overseas. The war around them has been getting worse and sleeping on the boat is a tough task. He attends the most beautiful mass he has ever been to.
  • Growing Ill

    Growing Ill
    Brennan is put in the quarters. He is sick with a high fever. All they can do is give you pills. You can hope you’ll get better but there is no clear verdict if you’ll get better or not.
  • Honorable Discharge

    Honorable Discharge
    John is honorably discharged on this day. Nothing particularly interesting happens during his discharge. His contract is just up. He was remembered for his “stoicness,” and witty personality.
  • The War is Over

    The War is Over
    Five years after the assassination of the Archduke, Germany signs the treaty. The Treaty of Versailles marks the end of the first World War. Germany took the blame for the war. They had several responsibilities to take care of after the war.
