Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
A Serbian nationalist attacked Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie, as they made their way through the streets of Sarajevo. Ferdinand was next in line for the throne and was not particularly well liked in aristocratic circles. However, his death caused a chain reaction of events culminating in the outbreak of World War I. -
Austria and Serbia
Austria presented Serbia with an ultimatum and gave them 48 hours to reply. The Serbs agreed to all of the Austrian demands bar one. The Austrians were so surprised that the foreign minister hid it for 2 days from the Germans. The Kaiser commented that the reply was “a great moral victory for Vienna, but with it, every reason for war disappears." -

The Treaty of Versailles Was Signed
This was one of the peace treaties at the end of World War I. It ended the war between Germany and the Allied Powers. It was signed exactly five years after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. -

Mass unemployment and poverty caused great anger and dictatorial governments told them their country was superior and it was ok for them to take what they wanted by force. It was exactly what they wanted to hear in the circumstances and caused 25 countries became dictatorships from 1929 to 1939. -

Led by Adolf Hitler, the National Socialist German Workers' Party grew into a mass movement and ruled Germany through totalitarian means from 1933 to 1945.
