The Cause of the War: Gavrilo Princip
-On 28, June 1914 Gavrilo Princip went to go assassinate the Serbian President.
-Tensions were already high because of militarism, imperialism, alliance systems, and nationalism.
-The assassination pushed everyone past the point and once one country declared war, so did their alliances. -

-Battle took place at Ypres, Belgium
-They fought with gas and in trenches
-This battle is important because we proved we could do the job that is asked and proved we are a force to be messed wtih -
Introduction of tanks
-The first tank was made by the British.
-They were used to counter trench warfare.
-They easily past no-mans land
-Protected agaisnt machine guns and sharpnel bombs
-Track machinery technologies used later in farming. -
Battle of Somme
-Battle took place on the Somme River, France.
-They fought in trenches

-They showed Canadians can endure bad conditions
-Taught commanders different tactics
-Around one million lives lost in total, which just idiocy of war -
Conscription: The Military Service Act
-500,000 French troops revolt
-Lack of troops mean we could lose the war so the Military Service Act was put in place in Canada
-Told men ages 18 and up to go to war and if they refused, they would be arrested.
-400,000 conscription letters were sent out.
-Basically sent people to their deaths, causing riots/ violent acts. -
Battle of Vimy Ridge
-Battle took place in Vimy, Northern Fance.
-They fought using the creeping barrage tactice, machine guns and trenches
Importance:
-Gave hope to allies
-Gave lots of pride because British and French troops failed.
