    The Black Hand was a serbian nationalist group that took responsibility for the Archduke's assassination. The man that killed Archduke Ferdinand was Gavrilo Princip.
  • Austria-Hungary declares war

    Rank: 2
    Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia. This was due to Serbia not finding the murderer of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in a month.
  • Germany Declared War

    Rank: 4
    Russia had an alliance with Serbia who was at war with Austria-Hungary. Austria-Hungary and Germany also had an alliance therefore Germany declared war on Russia.
  • Great Britain Declares War

    Rank: 5
    Germany declared war on France because France was an ally of Russia. Great Britain then declared war on Germany, for Britain had a loose alliance with Russia and France
  • Lusitania Sunk

    Rank: 7
    The lusitania was a British-registered ocean liner that was sunk by German submarines. 1,197 people died including 123 americans. This helped turn public opinion against Germany.
  • Battle of Somme

    Rank: 10
    Fought between the German Empire, the British Empire, and the French Third Republic. It took place on both sides of the upstream Somme river in France. The allies suffered a total loss of 600,000 men with Britain sustaining 420,000 and France with 194,000. Germany lost 440,000 men. This was one of the deadliest battles in World War I.
  • America Joins WW1

    The United States congress voted to declare war on Germany and later approved April 6, 1917. A little while later the U.S. declared war on Austria-Hungary. The main reason that the U.S. joined was the Zimmerman Telegram and the sinking of the Lusitania.
  • Treaty of Brest-Litvosk

    Signed between the new Bolshevik government of soviet Russia and the Central Powers. This treaty ended Russia's participation in WW1. The revolution in Russia brought up the new government that signed this treaty.
  • Armistice

    Signed by Germany and the allies at 5AM. The peace would officially start on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. This was a temporary peace while the official treaty was being created.
  • Treaty of Versailles

    This treaty was the official end of WW1 and was signed in Paris, France at the Palace of Versailles. It was signed between Germany and the allies. In this treaty Germany was forced to give up around 10 percent of all pre-war territory. They also were forced to have a smaller military.
