Archduke Francis Ferdinand is assassinated
Rebel Gavrilo Princip was the assassin. The Austro-Hungarian emperor blamed Serbia for the death of his nephew. One mouth later, he declared war on Serbia despite having no proof that Serbia was responsible. -
Countries Declare War on Other Countries
Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia which started a chain reaction. Seven European nations were at war & they were called Central Powers & Allied Powers. It spread into Europe, Africa, and Asia. -
Sinking of Lusitania
A German U-boat fired a torpedo & exploded the Lusitania & killed 1,200 people (128 Americans). President Wilson sent a letter of protest to Germany. It is getting harder for Americans to stay neutral because people don't like Germany. -
The U.S Enters The War
Woodrow Wilson asked Congress to declare war on Germany. Congress declared that the United States and Germany were at war. Americans factories stopped production of consumer goods to make war supplies. -
World War I Ends
The Germans realized they could not win the war. The German army officers and the officers of the Allied forces met in a private railroad car in France. The war had weakened the great powers of Europe. -
Paris Peace Conference
The purpose of the conference was to discuss and write a peace treaty that was acceptable to nations that fought in the war. Three leaders who attended were David Lloyd George of Great Britain, Georges Clemenceau of France, and Vittorio Orlando of Italy. President Wilson believed that the treaty did not provide the just peace he wanted. -
Congress Rejects Treaty of Versailles
The Republicans senators did not like the idea of a League of Nations. The Treaty of Versailles did not bring about a fair and just peace. Within 20 years, the nations of the world would be at war again.
