Gavrilo Princip assasinated archduke franz fernidad and his wife sophie in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Many felt as though it was 'for the best'. The Emporer expressed relief over the assasination, he felt that Franz Fernidand wasn't a good heir. -
Start of World War One
World War I was caused after Archduke Franz Fernidand was assainated. The continual tension between the Triple Entente and the Triple Alliace finally 'burst' when that event occured.
It was mainly held in Europe, but due to alliances there were many battles across the world. -

The German army opened the western front by invading Luxembourg and Belgium and then taking over important industrial parts of France. -
Battle of Marne Starts
After invading Belguim the 1st German Army headed towards Paris. They were 48.28 kilometres north-east of Paris before the 6th French Army attacked them. -
Australian Occupation of German New Guinea Starts
Australian Naval & Military Expeditionary Force (ANMEF) went to German New Guinea to destroy/take over the radio and coal stations. These instructions from Great Britian were quickly followed, as the German occupation was a threat to merchant shipping boats/trade routes. Day number not found. -

The 6th French Army won the battle, but the Germans captured a large part of the north-east of France. -
Battles of Ypres Start
The British entered the Belguim town of Ypres to attack the Germans. The poor November weather conditions put the battle to a halt until the Germans chlorine-gased the French soilders, who were saved by the Canadian soldiers who used handkerchiefs soaked in urine to protect themselves. -
Australian Occupation of German New Guinea Ends
After the treaty of Versailles, Germany lost German New Guinea (which became Territory of New Guinea). Territory of New Guinea was then under Australian control.

Sinking of the RMS Lusitania
Commander William Thomas Turner didn't follow instructions given to him by the British Admiralty. At 2:12pm the ship was hit by a German exploding torpedo and sunk off the south coast of Ireland.

Battle of Verdun Starts
The Battle of Verdun was fought by the French and Germans on the Western Front on hills north of Verdun-sur-Meuse in north-eastern France. The battle area was extremly small, less than ten square kilometres. -

The Somme Offernsive was fought between the French and English empires against the German empire along the Somme Valley in France. By the end of the first day around sixty-thousand people died. -
Battle of Fromelles Starts
The Battle of Fromelles was fought by Australian troops on the western front. The battle was initiated to draw the German army away from moving south to Sommes. -
Battle of Fromelles Ends
The Germans won as the Australians were forced to retire. The German army contained more than double the amount of Birtish and Australian soldiers. Over 5,500 Australians died or were captured. -
Somme Offensive Ends
More than one million people died or were wounded. The Allies won, but both sides had significant losses. Britain would afterwards force people to join the army, as the majority of the volunteers died. -
Battle of Verdun Ends
The French advanced at the Germans in an rolling artillery barrage, many soilders died and the Germans desperatley tried to win the battle. They lost to the French, as they had been defeated back to their original points.

20,000 Canadians attacked the Germans on the hills in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of France. -
Battle of Vimy Ridge Ends
The Canadians had a very precise plan and so the Germans were forced to withdraw. 3,598 people from the British Empire died and another 7,004 were left wounded. -

The Battle of Passchendaele was fought by the Allies of World War I against the Germans. It was based in Passendale, Belgium. -

The Canadian Army captured Passchendaele. The Allies lost half a million casualties and the Germans lost around a quarter of a million casualties. -

Germans Leave the Westen Front
After being in war for so many years, Germany was running out of soldiers and money. Many German troops surrended in large numbers. The German army started to retreat whilst the German Revolution created a new government, whom which quickly signed an armistice.
