After one month of the death of the archduke of Austria caused by a Serbian nationalist. Austria Hungary gave Serbia a list of demands. Although Serbia agreed to all of them. Austria - hungary believed that the only way to respond to the attack was to declare war. -
U.S remains neutral
On August 4 President Woodrow Wilson,officially announces that the United States will remain neutral and not get involved in the war. The public was in favor with the announcement, beside former president Theodore Roosevelt who tried to pressure Wilson to join in. He believed that Germans attacking the ships was unfair. Although there was many attacks Wilson tried to keep the United States neutral. -
The first battle of the Marne begins
On September 6 the first battle of Marne begins. This battle was located in north and east of Paris.This was the first battle in where radio intercepts and automotive transport of troops.This battle that ended the Germans trying to invade Paris. It was also the beginning of trench warfare. Which would be on of the things world war one was known for. -
Unofficial Christmas Truce
It all started on Christmas eve when some of the soldiers started to sing some carlos to each other. On Christmas German soldiers climbed out of their trenches and started to say Merry Christmas to their enemies in their native language. At first they thought it was a trick but when they noticed they were unarmed they quickly joined them. The men exchanged small presents and shared as mall game of soccer. While others took that day to bury the people they lost. -

Albert enlisted into the army when he was just 19 years old.He served in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in France during the final days of the war. He writes down his experiences in a dairy during the month of October which he calls the most eventful month of his life. -
The second battle of Ypres begins
Poisonous smoke had been used before during the war. But Germany took it to a whole new level when they started making chemical weapons. They used xylyl bromide shells which is toxic but was a failure since it was winter. But still managed to kill 1000 russian soldiers. The Germans finally made a gas that was successful. While the opposite troops waited for the Germans to attack.The Germans decided to release chlorine gas. Thanks to the poisonous gas the Germans were able to take over Ypres. -
The battle of Gallipoli begins
The battle of Gallipoli was an unsuccessful attempt to control the sea route from Europe and Russia. This is also known as the Gallipoli Campaign or Dardanelles Campaign. Do to the deficiency of brainpower and the lack of knowledge of the territory the allied powers failed to invade Gallipoli . -
Lusitania is sunk
Lusitania was a big ship that carried around 1,959 passengers. Although the ship was heading towards Liverpool, England . It nevered reached its destination for it was torpedoed by a German u-boat. It was later discovered that the ship had 173 tons or war ammunition. 1193 out of the 1960 people died including 128 Americans. Only 763 people survived. -
Gas shells attack
During the month of October Albert describes his time in the war.
At around 12 am the army of Germany threw a gas shell towards the front line and Carpenter didn't put his gas mask fast enough. He was sent to the hospital where he took about 20 pills and was sent back to front line. -
Keep on going
Carpenter is still hurting from when he inhaled gas and is violently coughing up blood. He took charge of telephone either way and had his first hot meal since he was on the front. -
No food. Just Hope
They had run out of food but they still tried thinking positively .They all had run out ammunition for some guns. -
The Last battle
They were preparing for the last battle. They were running on no sleep and were very hungry. Albert felt home sick. -
Out at last
After leaving Bich at 3 am they arrived to Machault at 12:30pm. Where they ate everything they could. They then took trucks and started their journey home. -
The battle Verdun begins
This battle was one of the longest and bloodiest battles in wwI. The battle started on February 21 and ended until December 16. With over 700,000 casualties. Although the Germans had the lead at the beginning gaining over the land . Due to the fact that they had lost a lot of men during the process they called off their offensive. france was then able to take over. -
Wold war I ends
After 5 years of fighting the Allied powers worked on a peace treaty with little opinion of the Germans. Although the treaty was harsh on the Germans they agreed to sign the treaty and to pay for the cost of the war.
