Battle of Verdun Begins
The battle of Verdun begins. Germans launch tons of artillary shells before advancing. -
Germans Capture Fort Douaumont
The Germans, in the afternoon of the 24th, capture the centrepiece of the French fortification system at Verdun. No gunfire was exchanged in the raid. -
Germans Capture Village of Douaumont
The Germans, after losing effective artillary cover due to advancing to fast finally capture the village of Douaumont. It had been a struggle as each new advance became more costly because of Pétain's artillery massed on the opposite bank of the river Meuse. -
French Assault
The French attempt an assault to retake Fort Douaumont. The assault begins after a massive artillary preparation. The assault lasts for three days but ultimatly fails. General Charles Mangin is blamed for the failure. -
German Assault
The Germans assault on Fort Vaux is successful with by June 2nd the Germans manning the top. There were however still French underground. The Germans and French have terrible fights underground until 7th of June when the underground French surrender when they run out of water. -
Failed German Attack
The Germans prepare to attack Fort Souville by using gas on French Artillary. This was ineffective due to new gas masks. Germans had also been shelling the Fort. However when the assault came the path was too thightly packed. They then came under heavy fire from French artillary and machine gunners who had managed to survive the bombardment. A few Germans made it to the top of the fort on July 12th but had to retreat. -
French Recapture Fort Douaumont
French launch a major offensive to recapture Fort Douaumont. The planner was General Nivelle who was an experienced commander in the use of artillary. The prepartion lasted 6 days with two French Saint-Chamond railway guns which shot 0.91t shells with at least 20 hitting the Fort and 6 blowing up inside. It was then recaptured by French Marines on 24th of October. -
French Start Final Offensive
The French start a broad offensive plan to retake more land. Planned by General Nivelle and executed by General Mangin. Within 36 hours the French had captured 11,387 prisoners, including 284 officers, and 115 artillery pieces. Some German officers complained of a lack of comfort in captivity to which General Mangin replied "We do regret it, gentlemen, but then we did not expect so many of you". This was the end of the Battle of Verdun. -
