Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by a Serbian nationalist named Gavrilio Princip. Serbs were mad that most of their people had to live under the harsh rule of the Austro-Hungarian empire, and wished to create a "Greater Serbia" that included all of their people. This event was the SPARK that set many old alliances in motion and led to WWI.
