Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
Franz Ferdinand was Archduke of Austria-Este, Austro-Hungarian, and Royal Prince of Hungary and Bohemia. His reign was from 1889-1914. He and his wife were killed in Sarajevo, the capital of
the province Bosnia and Herzegovina. This action was beginning of WW1. -
Beginning of World War One
Formally called the Great, World War One was the beginning of many battles that took the lives of soldiers and citizens. The war was basically centered in Europe. The Allies were called " The Triple Entente" (Great Britain, France and Russia; the U.S. and other countries sooned joined) and the Central Powers were the German Empire, Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman Empire, and the kingdom of Bulgaria. -
Battle of Mulhouse
The Battle of Mulhouse was also called the Battle of Alsace. This was the opening attack by the French on Germany. This was an attempt for the french to regain the province of Alsace, which they were forced to give to the German Empire. -
The Battle of Marne
Also known as the Miracle of Marne, was fought between September 5-12, 1914. The Allied victory over the German Army was under Chief of Staff Helmuth von Moltke the Younger. 81, 700 soldiers died (Allies) and 220,000 died (Central Power). -
Christmas Truce
The Christmas Truce happened on the Western Front . The week before, German and British Soldiers exchanged greetings to one another between their trenches. The truce was symbolic for peace and humanity. -
Second Battle of Champagne
The Battle of Champagne was fought September 25 ,1915 to November 6, 1915. The battle was against the French offensive invading the German Army. The victory by the French was because of the weakness of the German defense in the Champagne Region. -
The Battle of Somme
This is also know as the "Somme Offensive". Took place between July 1, 1916 to November 18, 1916. British and French armies faced the German Army. This was also one of the largest battles in during the war. -
United States enter the War
Though the United States wanted to be netural, the country entered the war because of a few factors. What triggered the U.S. to enter was Germany sinking two ships: Lusitania (killing 120 Americans) and Sussex. Foreign Minister Alfred Zimmerman provoked Mexico and Japan to attack the U.S. President Wilson asked Congress for permission to go to war. Congress declared it on April 6, 1917. -
The Second Battle of Marne
The Second Battle of Marne was fought between July 15, 1918 to August 6, 1918. This battle was also called the "Battle of Reims". The German Army attacked first. The Allies ended up taking 29,367 prisoners, 793 guns, and 3,000 machine guns and caused 168,000 casualities on the Germans. -
End of World War I
Four empires were of no more: Austo-Hungarian, Ottoman, German and Russian. The Allies lost the most soldiers (5,525,000), the most wounded (12,831,000) and the most missing (4,121,000). Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Frnce had a combined total of 42.7 percen of its male population gone. Other factors like typhus, starvation, famine also contributed to deaths of many people.
