Archduke Franz Ferdinand Assassinated
While riding in a motorcade, and after several failed bombing attempts, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were shot and killed by a Serbian assassin. This is regarded as the first act of the first World War. Funny fact: One of the assassins who failed to bomb Ferdinand tried to kill himself with a cyanide pill, and jumped into the Miljacka river. The river was only 5 inches deep, and the pill only induced vomiting. He was beaten by the nearby crowd and taken into custody. -
