Archduke Franz Ferdinand assassinated
Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by the black hand. This caused a domino effect of alliances to go into war. -
War is declared
The assassination caused a domino effect of allies turning on one another. Over time, more and more countries joined the war. Austria Hungary and Serbia started it though. -
Battle of Tannenberg
The Germans gained a victory against the Russians. Russia lost 30000 troops while the germans only lost 13000. It was the first major battle of world war 1. -
Battle of the Marne
This battle revealed the German's aggressive two-front war strategy. This battle occurred within 30 miles of Paris. -
Gallipoli Campaign
Its intent was to allow allied ships to pass through, capture Istanbul, and get Ottoman Turkey out of the war. -
The Lusitania
The German submarine sank the British passenger liner Lusitania. Germany said that they believed the British were secretly transporting military supplies. The Germans had to stop attacks on the unarmed enemy as a result. -
The battle of Verdun
The battle of Verdun is considered the longest, bloodiest battle of world war 1. The germans used total war destroying 400000 French soldiers and Germans. It lasted from February 21st to December 18th, 1916. -
The battle of Somme
British launched an attack on the German troops to pull them away from Verdun. There were craters left from this and over 1 million died on both sides. July 1st-November 1916 -

Germany asked Mexico to go against the US, in hopes that it would distract them, but Mexico refused. -
The Russian Revolution
Russia withdraws from the war causing the central powers to split their military. This also freed up 1 million German soldiers. -
The Us join WW1
The US formally declared war on Germany and its allies. President Wilson decided to join because of the renewal of unrestricted submarine warfare and anger from the Zimmerman telegram. -
Russia Leaves the war
Vladimir Lenin leads and overthrows the Czar. They signed the treaty of Brest-Litovsk causing them to leave. -
The war Guilt Clause
Germany takes full responsibility for starting the war and agrees to pay for all damages. -
The treaty of Versailles
This treaty officially ended world war 1. It is also said to have been a cause of the second world war. It was a negotiation in which the Germans weren't invited. -
Armistice
This is considered to be the official ending of the fighting, not the war, just the fighting.
