Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand
Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated in Sarajevo. The assassinator was Gavrile Princip, a Serbian Nationalist. Some say that this is the start of World War 1. -
Austria-Hungary Declares War On Serbia
One month after the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand, Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia. The Austria-Hungary government blamed Serbia for the assassination of Archdule. -
Russia Mobilizes Its Army
To defend Russia's ally, Serbia, it mobilizes its army to intervene with Austria-Hungary. This mobilization leads to other European powers to migrate. -
Germany Declares War On Russia
Only four days after Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, Germany declares war on Russia. Germany's ally was Austria-Hungary, and because Russia was allied with Serbia, Germany knew that Russia would soon declare war on Austria-Hungary, and Germany and Russia has began mobilizing their armies, Germany decided to declare war first. -
Germany Declares War On France
Only two days after Germany declares war on Russia, they declare war on France. They did this because German field marshal, Alfred Count von Schlieffen, created the Schlieffen Plan. This plan was basically defeating the Franco-Russia alliance by taking them both on at the same time, but holding off Russia and attacking and defeating France flanking movements. -
The British Enters The War
Belgium ports were nearby to the British coast, and if Germany was able to get control of Belgium, the British saw it as a serious threat. Germany was able to attack France through Belgium, and British declared War with Germany shortly after. -
Japan Enters The War
Since Japan was allied with Great Britian during the time of the war, and the British just went in war with Germany, Japan declared war on Germany. -
The Ottoman Empire Enters The War
The Ottoman Empire entered the war to help the Central Powers, and to give help to Germany. -
Russia Declares War On Turkey
Since Turkey helped Germany on the attack on Russia, Russia decided to declare war on Turkey. -
Britain and France declared war on Turkey
Because Russia declares war on Turkey, and Britian and France are allies with Russia, they wanted to help Russia. -
Italy Joins The War By Declaring War On Austria-Hungary
Before the war, Italy was allied with Germany and Austria-Hungary, forming the Triple Alliance. Italy stayed neutral at the beginning of World War 1, and then betrayed the Triple Alliance because of a couple reasons. Most important being the Triple Alliance was a defensive group, not an attacking. Germany and Austria-Hungary, however, started attacking, and Italy did not like that, -
The Battle Of Verdun
Starting on February 21, 1916, the Battle of Verdun was the longest battle throughout World War 1. It was between Germany and France. This battle had close to 700,000 casualties in total. In the end, Germany failed to complete their objective of destroying the French army. Although, the was no "real winner" to this battle as it was a stalemate. The German army did retreat, although the casualties on both sides decided there was no true winner. -
United States Enters The War
The United States joins the war on the side of the Allies. The United States was neutral for the first three years of the war, and decided to join the war and declare war on Germany. One of the main reasons being is because Germany resumed to doing unrestricted submarine warfare. -
The Hundred Days Offensive
This was the last hundred days of the war, from July 18, 1918, to November 11, 1918. This was a series of battles between the Allied Powers and Associated Powers, against the Central Powers (Germany and Austria-Hungary). This went on until armistice, an agreement to stop fighting for a certain period of time, on November 11, 1918. This series of battles had a total around 1,800,000 casualties. -

Germany formally surrenders. All nations also decided to not continue battling until terms of peace were made. -
