Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the heir to the Austrian Throne and was assassinated by a Serbian nationalist. His wife Sophia was shot and killed along with him during a drive through the city of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. -
Schlieffen Plan
Germany invaded Belgium, the plan called for a holding action against Russia, combined with a quick drive through Belgium to Paris; after France had fallen, the two German armies would defeat Russia. This marked the first refugee crisis in Brussels, Belgium. -
Sinking of the British Liner Lusitania
U-Boat (untersee), Submarine sunk the British liner Lusitania, killing 1,198 and 128 were americans. This was a response to British starving the Germans through the Blockade where750,000 died. -
Battle of Somme
This battle lasted until mimd november, the British suffered 60,000 casualitieson the first day alone. Final casualties totaled to 1.2 milion.
