1914 Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
In June of 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, who was also the heir to the Austrian throne visited the Bosnian Capital of Sarajevo. While they were driving a Serbian Nationalist by the name Gavrilo Princip stepped in from the crowd and killed the Archduke and his wife the Archduchess Sophia. Gavrilo was part of a Serbian Nationalist Association called the Black Hand. This assassination caused Austria-Hungary to go to war with Serbia. German took this chance to also declare war on France in July 28. -
Schlieffen Plan
On August 3, 1914 the Germans enacted a plan called the Schlieffen Plan. This was a plan to invade and take over Russia. The German Army would march through Belgium and France conquering as they marched. Then they would launch a strong attack on Russia and try to take it over. -
Sinking of British Liner Lusitania
German Submarine sank the British Liner the Lusitania. Americans were angered that the Germans also killed some Americans in the process. To be exact 128 Americans lost their lives. The Germans only line of defense was that the liner was carrying ammunition. -
Sinking of British Liner Arabic
Another German Submarine sank another British Liner. This time it killed 2 Americans. Again the Americans were outraged and this time the Germans promised that they would not attack anymore civilian liners. -
Sinking of French Passenger Liner Sussex
After the German's promised not to sink anymore passenger ships. They ended up breaking their promise and sinking the French Liner Sussex. The Americans were angry and said that they would go to war with the Germans if they did not abide to their promise. -
Battle of Somme
A horrible battle that had a horrific number of casualties. By the end of the war between Germany and Russia there were 1.2 million casualties. But there were also 60,000 casualties on the first day alone. Both sides incorporated Trench Warfare. -

Zimmerman Note
A note sent by German Prime Minister to a German Ambassador in Mexico. It said that if Mexico joined the Germans then the Germans would help Mexico reclaim Texas from the Americans. -
