Militarism is glorifying military power and keeping an army prepared for war, this happened all over Europe. This lead to the making of the Triple Alliance.

Dual Alliance
Bismarck formed the Dual Alliance between Germany and Austria-Hungary, because they were afraid of France. This lead to the Triple Alliance.

Triple Alliance
Italy joined the dual alliance making it the Triple alliance. Bismarck took another possible ally away from France by making a treaty with Russia. This lead to the making of the Triple Entente.

Rise of Kaiser Wilhelm II
Wihelm, the ruler of Germany, was a proud stubborn man. He did not wish to share power with anyone. He let his nations’ treaty with Russia lapse, which resulted in Russia responded with forming a defensive military alliance with France in 1892.

Alliance between France and Russia
Russia formed a defensive military alliance with France. Germany would then be forced to fight a two- front war or a war on both its eastern and western borders. This lead to conflicts between Germany and France over Morocco.

Conflicts over Morocco
In 1905, Germany and France nearly fought over who would control Morocco, in Northern Africa. Most of Europe supported France so Germany backed down. This is an example of Imperialism, expanding an empire by taking over weaker countries, led to conflicts and competitions between European countries -
Triple Entente
Great Britain formed the entente because Wilhelm, ruler of Germany, was making the German navy equal to the British. The entente did not bind Britain to fight with France and Russia but ensure that Britain would not fight against them.

Austria annexing Bosnia and Herzegovina
Austria annexed, took over, Bosnia and Herzegovina. They were two lager Balkan areas with lager Slavic populations. Serbian leaders, who were going to rule the provinces, were outraged. Tensions between Serbia and Austria steadily rose. This lead to the Serbia vowing to take Bosnia and Herzegovina away from Austria. Which lead to Austria-Hungary vowing to crush any Serbian effort to undermine its authority in the Balkans.

Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand
Ferdinand and his wife visited the capital of Bosnia. They were shot by chance point-blank range while they rode through the streets of Sarajevo in an open car. The killer was Gavrilo Princip a 19-year-old Serbian, a member of the Black Hand. The Black Hand was a secret society committed to ridding Bosnia of Austrian rule. This lead to Austria excusing Serbia for the assassination.

Austria declares war on Serbia
The assassination of the Archduke lead to Austria punishing Serbia. Austria gave Serbia numerous demands, Serbia knew that refusing would lead to war. After Serbia agreed to most of Austria demands, they declared war of Serbia. Serbia's ally, Russia, took action. Russia moved their troops toward Austrian border. This lead to Germany declaring war on Russia.

Russia expected that Germany was going to join Austria; they also sent troops along the German border. This lead to Russia declaring war on France.

After Russia declared war on France, Great Britain declared war in Germany. This lead to the world war.

Russia looked for its ally, Russia, for help. Two days after declaring war on Russia, Russia declared war on France. This lead to Great Britain declaring war on Germany.
