    Assassination Of Franz Ferdinand
    During a visit to Sarajevo, a Serbian terrorist group called “The Black Hand” assassinated Franz Ferdinand. People knew that a war would happen soon, since most countries already formed an alliance. Austria-Hungary was a contributor to this cause. This sparked countries into getting involved to help their allies. This event leads up to Germany declaring war on Russia.

    Germany declares war on Russia
    Ever since the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, Russia was on the sidelines watching. They knew they had to help their ally. That was when Germany decided to declare war on Russia. Germany wanted to protect their own ally, Austria-Hungary. They had devised the Schlieffen Plan, but it never went through. Germany had to go through the lands of Belgium to conquer France. Britain then ensured that Belgium would be safe, so they declared war on Germany. And WW1 starts….

    Before the war, countries started creating alliances with one another. People knew that there would eventually be a world war. But they didn’t know it was so soon. After the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, Russia started getting involved to protect Serbia. France decided to help too. Germany then came in to protect their ally, Austria-Hungary. After Germany’s plan to conquer France, Britain joins in the war. Soon countries slowly joining, hoping to win themselves.

    Canada Volunteers for the war
    After Britain declared war on Germany, Canada had to come along to help. Canada was part of the British Empire along with other countries. Prime Minister Borden helps the cause by sending over 25 000 soldiers. Sam Hughes, Minister of Militia, helps recruits volunteers. Some hoped they would find adventure and return in Christmas, but that never happened. In about a week 10 000 volunteers came together to help bring Germany down.

    To prepare the Canadian troops for the war, they were sent off near Quebec City for the Valcartier training camp. Each soldier was given a Ross Rifle. These rifles were extraordinary, but failed later on. While training, soldiers were poorly equipped, they proved later in the war that Canadians were fighters.

    The battle of Ypres was a little bit dangerous. It was the first time the Germans used poison gas on the western front. The chlorine gas was hazardous and people tried finding a cure. But Canadians found a cure; soak a handkerchief in urine and hold over face. In the end of the battle, Canadians were marked as talented, committed and a brave fighting force.

    Praire Women in Canada get the right to vote
    Nellie McClung was an activist that helped get women their right to vote. She went around trying to convince people that women should get their right. Soon enough Nellie got Manitoba to accept and later on Prairie women get their rights. Farmers were the first ones on the wagon, accepting that women are genuinely as important as men are.

    Battle of Verdun
    The battle of Verdun was considered as one of the most important battles of WW1. It was fought on the western front between the Germans and the French. The war was deadly causing in over 700 000 deaths. Life in Verdun was horrific. A lot off deaths occurred, scarring people. The grounds were covered in mud and gun shells. Soldiers were devastated in the lost, but kept their head up.

    During the first day, the Canadians managed to lose the highest amount of causalities on a single day. The commanding officer for the Somme was Gen. Haig. He encouraged the soldiers to keep on fighting for at least 141 more days. In the end a total of 1.2 million causalities, but they gained 11km of land. The most important part was that Canadians gained a reputation as fierce fighters.

    USA declares war on Germany
    The sinking of Lusitania 1915 was one of the main reasons the USA declared war on Germany. But the most important reason was when a German citizen named Zimmermann, sent a telegram to Mexico. Zimmermann intended to get Mexico go to war with the United States for in return, Germany will give Mexico it’s lost territory. News of the telegram got US attention, and they then declared war.

    Vimy Ridge
    Vimy Ridge overlooked the surrounding area it covered. Gen. Sir Arthur Currie kept planning and planning, hoping to get the perfect battle plan. During the war, Canadians came to fight together as a single corps. They had have captured more grounds, guns and prisoners. This lead to victory for the Canadians. In honor of their tremendous efforts, a memorial was built on Vimy Ridge.
  • The Russian Revoultion

    The Russian Revoultion
    Vladimir Lenin, a leader of a communist group called The Bolsheviks, turns his back from Russia. He then gets exiled to Switzerland, but not until Germany helps him return back to Russia. Germany hoped to get Russia out of the war, so Germany could get an advantage. Lenin makes a mistake causing Russia to lose power over some countries. Soon after the revolution, Russia withdraws from the war.
  • Passchendaele

    Passchendaele
    Passchendaele was one of the most deadliest and dangerous missions for any Canadian. The ground was muddy and felt like quicksand. The Canadians planned on attacking in series of battles. More than 15000 casualties for the Canadians. In the end, the Canadians battled for months securing a victory. They performed exceedingly well and were honored. For their outstanding performance a couple of soldiers received the Victoria Cross.

    Armistice Day - WW1 Ends
    At approximately 11:00am on November 11th, 1918, war had stopped. The day was remembered as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day. The Allied Nations and the Germans gathered around at the Palace of Versailles to sign the peace treaty. The Allied Nations already signed a treaty on June 28 of the same year. Armistice Day is used to accommodate the fallen ones during WW1 and WW2.

    The Peace Treaty of Versailles
    The Treaty of Versailles stated that the war should end between Germany and the Allied Nations. But it wasn’t until June 28, 1919 did the Allied Nations signed the Armistice. The Germans took some time to think, and the Treaty of Versailles was signed in the Palace of Versailles. The treaty had many circumstances, one was the Germans were taken responsible for the deaths of the fallen ones. In the end, all was well until Germans were humiliated and WW2 slowly started taken place.
