    The Renaissance was the name given to the period of time between the 14th and 17th century. During this period, some of the greatest works of art were created by some of the most famous artists of all time. Masterpieces such as 'The Mona Lisa', 'The Last Supper', the statue of David and the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel were all created during this era in history.

    Joan of Arc is Buned at the Stake
    Joan of Arc was a farm girl in France during the 100 years war. After claiming to see visions of angels, she asked the King to place her at the head of the French army, to help them defeat the English. The uncrowned King agreed to her request and she lead the French army to several victories over the English before being captured by allies of the English forces. The English negotiated her transfer into their custody where she was found guilty of several charges and burned at the stake.

    During the age of exploration, Christopher Colobus was ordered by the King of Spain to find more land to claim for Spain to the west of Europe. Colombus travelled from Palos de la Frontera to America with three ships; the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria. He first reached America early on the 12th of October when they reached a beach on the Bahamas.

    Henry VIII Crowned King of England
    Henry VIII is probably one of the most weel known Kings of England, mainly because of his attitude towards the church and his spouses. Henry married a total of six times during his life and had two of his wives beheaded. Henry's issues with the Catholic church mainly began when he was refused a divorce from his first wife after she was unable to grant him a son, an heir to the throne of England. Henry then founded the church of England which enabled him to get a divorce.

    The plantation of Ulster occured during the reign of King James I, who wanted to colonise Ireland to make it part of the British Empire. During the Plantation, British planters would confiscate land from the native Irish and then force them to pay rent for being on the planters land.

    This was a battle that faught between the Catholic King James II and the Protestant King William of Orange. The Williamites wanted William on the Throne of England as they did not want a Catholic King and wanted to maintain Protestant and English rule in Ireland. William was the eventual victor despite the fact that James could have continued to fight. It was his order for his army to retreat that in reality lost them the battle as it demoralised the men and caused many men to desert the fight.

    The Industrial Revolution is the period between the 18th and 19th century. It is the era when Europe and America became more industrialised and urban. Before this most manufacturing was done in people's homes. Industrialisation caused more special purpose machinery and factories to be built. Poor people were badly exploited during the industrial revolution and foced to do difficult or dangerous jobs for minimal wages. The industrial revolution brought about the creation of steamboats and trains.

    The French revolution began in 1789 when members of the third estate in France grew weary of the way they were being treated compared to the other two estates. When France went into debt, King Louis XVI raised the taxes of the third estate and this proved to be the final straw for the majority of the French people. The first act of the French revolution was the storming of Bastille which is celebrated every year in Frace. The French Revolution led to the reign of terror in France.

    While tension had been growing in Europe for quite some time, the asassination of Franz Ferdinand was the spark which caused World War 1 to ignite. When the Austro-Hungarian Empire declared war against Serbia, the Superpowers of the world all picked sides and went to war against each other.

    The 1916 Easter Rising occured on Easter Monday, 1916. When the outbreak of World War 1 interrupted Ireland's campaign to get Home Rule, many Irish people grew tired of the English excuses and decided to take action believing that England's difficulty is Ireland's opportunity. That morning outside the GPO, Padraig Pearse read the Proclamation of the Irish Republic. Irish volunteersthen barricaded themselves in the GPO and other major buildings and battle ensued.

    World War One ended in 1918. Germany formally surrendered in November 1918 after untold damage was caused to the nations involved and up to 13 million people were killed. Germany and the Allied nations, except the U.S, signed the treaty of Versailles. As the instigator of the war, Germany was forced to pay a high price. It was this sanction that caused the U.S to not sign the Treaty of Versailles, but instead they negotiated their own treaty with Germany.

    Due to Germany's dissatisfaction with the Treaty of Versailles signed after WW1, Hitler took it upon himself to restore Germany to it's former glory. By doing this, he caused worry and anger among Europes Superpowers, leading to the greatest war in world history.
