    The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
    The Archduke and his wife were assassinated on June 28th, 1914 in their car passing through Bosnia. They were assassinated by Gavrilo Princip who was a Bosnian Serb nationalist.
  • War Is Declared

    Austria- Hungary first declared on July 28th 1914. A couple days later Russia began to create their army to protect Serbia. Then Germany declared was on Russia in order to support it's ally Austria-Hungary.

    This battle took place in West Flanders, Belgium. An attempt by the German army to break through allied lines and capture french ports on the English channel. 54,000 British died, 50,000 French, and 20,000 Belgium soldiers. German causalities were over 130.000.

    The Gallipoli campaign began February 19th, 1915 urged by Winston Churchill in the Gallipoli peninsula. The aim was to break through German-allied Ottoman Turkey's Dardanelles Strait. This would allow them to attack Germany and Austria from East and establish a link with Russia.

    A German U-boat torpedoed the British owned luxury steamship Lusitania. This killed 1,195 people including 128 Americans.

    The Battle of Verdun was in the Western Front of France. The battle was longest of World War 1. This battle was caused because the French repulsed a major German offensive. This battle ended with 550,000 French casualties and 450,000 German casualties.

    On March 21st, 1918 Germany launched their final offensive hoping to strike a blow at the allies and convince them to negotiate for peace before troops from the U.S could arrive. The final offensive failed.

    The Allies were suffering because they were hit hard 4 times by the Germans. Supported by U.S troops they launched a counter attack using tanks on a large scale which was successful and a vital breakthrough. This forced a German retreat on all sides. Germany's allies begin to dissolve, Bulgaria agreeing to an armistice by the end of September, Austria being defeated by late October, and Turkey stoping their movements a few days later.
