Formation of the Triple Alliance
The Triple Alliance was a defensive military alliance formed between Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy. Their agreement decreed that if any member of the alliance was attacked by a force possessing greater power, then support must be provided by the other members. -
Formation of the Triple Entente
The Triple Entente was an alliance formed between Britain, France and Russia. It was formed to counter the Triple Alliance that existed between Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy. Entente is the French word for friendship, understanding or agreement. -
Germany declares war on Russia
Germany declared war on Russia after Russia launched its land and sea forces upon Germany. Germany had made no military action previous to this and had no choice but to fight back and defend themselves. -
Germany declares war on France
Germany declared war on France and invaded Belgium through the use of the Schlieffen Plan. France and Russia sent in troops causing the Germany to defend on two sides. Hours after war declared against them, France declared war on Germany. -
Britain declares war on Germany
Britain declared war on Germany under the leadership of Prime Minister Herbert Asquith. Germany were in the proccess of invading Belgium, however Asquith managed rid Belgium of German presence, by threatening to surround the Germans with the combined might of French and Russian forces. -
The Anzacs land at Gallipoli
The landing at Gallipoli was led by the 3rd Brigade which was made up of some 4000 men. This force were to secure the beach for a further 6 Brigades. The original force of 4000 were split into 2 waves. The first wave consisted of 1500 men and the remaining 2500 made up the secoond wave. -
19th-20th December, Evacuation of Gallipoli
On the 13th of November 1915 the Comander in Chief of the British Army arrived at Gallipoli to survey the Anzac situation. In the the end he decided the Anzacs should evacuate as little more progress could be made. He was also of the opinion that it would be difficult to supply the Anzacs throughout the coming Winter as the area was prone to severe storms at that time of year. They disquised their withdrawral as preparation for the Winter to avoid making the Turkish suspicious. -
The US enters World War 1
US President Woodrow Wilson called for a declaration of war against Germany because they attempted to convince Mexico into an anti US alliance and for violating a pledge regarding German participation in unrestricted warfare in the the North Atlantic and Mediterranean region. -
Beginning of the battle of Amiens
The battle of Amiens was the beginning of an attack by the Allies known as the Hundred Days Offense. This was tantamount to the end of World War 1. This battle included one of the largest troop advancements of the war. This was on the first day when the Allies marched a 11 kilometres (7 miles). -
Armistice is signed
The armistice was an agreement between Germany and the Allies. It was also known as the "Armistice of Compiegne". This name was a tribute the location it was signed. A large percentage of the Armistice was written by Marshall Ferdinand Foch of France. It outlined things such as the exchange of prisoners of war, the German's retreat to their own borders and what measures would be taken against any future hostility.
