Assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinland
Rebel Gavrilo Principe was the assassin. The Austro-Hungarian emperor blamed Serbia for the death of his nephew. One month later, he declared war on Serbia despite having no proof. -

Sinking of Lusitania
The Germans fired on the Lusitania and it exploded killing 1,200 people. Roosevelt wanted to go to war, but wilson sent a letter to protest the German Government. The American people turned against Germany. -
U.S Enters the War
Woodrow Wilson asked congress to declare war on Germany. He said that America would fight for peace and justice and the world must be made safe for democracy. American factories stopped production of consumer goods to make war supplies. Over 400,000 African Americans became soldiers and fought in units separate from non African Americans. The selective Americans drafted young men to the army and navy. -
WWI Ends
The government of Germany asked the Allies for an armistice. The fighting stopped while both sides prepared to discuss how to end the war. The German army officers of the allied forces met in a private railroad car in France. -
Paris Peace Conference
The purpose of the conference was to discuss and write a peace treaty that was acceptable to nations that fought in the war. President Wilson decided to go to the Paris Peace conference. President Wilson believed that the treaty did not provide the just peace he wanted. Germany was not invited. The German was not pleased with the conditions of the treaty. Germany signed the Treaty of Versailles on July 28,1919 -
Congress Rejects Treaty Of Versailles
The treaty did not pass. The Senate Voted again in March 1920. The results was the same. It was the first time in United States history that the Senate had failed to ratify a peace treaty. The treaty of Versailles did not bring about a fair and just peace.
