First Trenches and Machine guns
Warfare had depended upon hand-to-hand combat. World War I popularized the use of the machine gun, capable of bringing down row after row of soldiers from a distance on the battlefield. This weapon, along with barbed wire and mines, made movement across open land both difficult and dangerous. Thus trench warfare was born. -

Many of these letters described his time in france and how he fought in ww1 against germany and the allied powers. Descriptions of terrorized and ravaged lands haunted him. He saw many wounded and dead. He talked more about how the war affected him and what happened before and after. How he survived and lived to tell his tale. -

Elliot Hugh Lee
When the United States entered World War I, First Lieutenant Elliott Lee was a recent graduate of Princeton, and hoped to contribute to the war effort by becoming an officer in the Army. He was advised to join the U.S. Army Ambulance Corps, which had units soon to depart for France to be attached to the French Army. -
Lusitania Sinks
A German submarine sinks the passenger liner Lusitania. The ship carried 1,198 people, 128 of them Americans. -

the Zimmermann Telegram, a message from German foreign secretary Arthur Zimmermann proposing that Mexico side with Germany in case of war between Germany and the United States. In return, Germany promises to return to Mexico the lost areas the USA took from them. -
Elliot's Help
Working on the front during the Second Battle of the Marne in July 1918, he was eventually awarded three Croix de Guerre by the French government. His service to France did not end with World War I: following a career in business, he helped lead a relief organization dedicated to restoring the country after World War II. -
