    Digging Ditches/Trenches into the ground helped them hide from the enemy. This was a new type of warfare. "No Mans Land" was a place both enemies would try to avoid because there was snipers for miles and miles just waiting for a enemy to cross that field.

    The start of the war was because of the assassination of Archduke Franz from Austria Hungary. It also started because of the rise in Nationalism, Imperialism, Militarism, and alliances.

    The machine gun dominated the war. This allowed both sides to shoot hundreds of rounds every minute. This helped clear territory faster by the fast shooting guns. They where made heavy but could be moved easily.

    Germany had to invade Belgium in order to invade France to execute the Schlieffen plan. Which was a plan Germany had to capture all territory in France.

    Germany defeated Russia while Russian infantries where on there way to invade Germany. Over 50,00 Russian soldiers died and over 92,000 were taken as Prisoners of war. This was a crucial victory for allies.

    Allies stop Germany from invading Paris. This was an offensive war for the French and the British. The French and British didn't want Germany's advancing soldiers.

    Germany sunk a British passenger ship by a U-boat. Germany was lining up against the U.K. so once the Germans identified the ship they shot a torpedo the ship had sunk within 18 minutes

    France & Germany were going to war and they weren't gaining or losing any territory during this battle. Germany fought for the forts they recently took from the French but the French eventually managed to push back the line which made Germany lose the territory they recently gained.

    Tanks changed the way we fought war. It changed war by tanks being able to go over all obstacles including trenches. They never had to change a tire but they did sometimes have to fix the chains that made the vehicle move.

    Theodore E. Beach left for World War 1 on march 3rd 1918 on a boat named Leviathan.
  • Theodore gets shot at by torpedo

    Theodore gets shot at by torpedo
    While Mr. Beach was on tower watch @8 bells he got shot at by a torpedo and they thought it stopped but, the shells still were raining down. Fortunately for him and his platoon he was not hurt and soon left for Liverpool.

    Theodore took a train to Winchester he states "the ride was so bumpy and a devil ride" (Diary of Theodore Edward Beach). He later arrived at a camp where he stayed a few weeks following.

    Theodore finally arrives on German War territory. When he arrived at this post he fixed posts, forts, and dug trenches for 3 straight weeks. Once he was relieved from his position by another infantry he received Red & White wine.

    Some of Theodore's Platoon got to go home and he was still fighting for the U.S.. After he said his goodbyes he went to the firing range to practice aiming he states that " we shot over a couple of thousand rounds of ammo off that day". Germany at thus time was on full retreat to Marne.
