Cause of WW1: Assassination of Franz Herdinand
The assassination of Archduke Franz Herdinand, who was the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, took place on 28 June 1914 when himself and his wife visited Sarajevo. There were two attempts against the Archduke and his wife. They survived the first attack, however the second attempt was successful. They were assassinated by a Serbian-owned organisation, the Black Hand, by Gavrilo Princip. This assassination triggered conflict between countries and its alliances, which triggered World War 1.
