  • Stalemate

    Under the front lines of WWI. The stalemate led both sides to deploy legions of engineers to tunnel under the western front, recalling medieval siege tactics. In the grip of this deadly stalemate, the Germans and their French and British adversaries resorted to siege-warfare techniques that had changed little over the centuries.
  • Belgium

    On 14 September Austria sent a note to all belligerents and neutrals suggesting a meeting for peace talks on neutral soil, and on 15 September Germany made a peace offer to Belgium. As Russia mobilised in support of Serbia, Germany invaded neutral Belgium and Luxembourg before moving towards France, leading Britain to declare war on Germany.

    After the German march on Paris was halted, what became known as the Western Front settled into a battle of attrition, with a trench line that would change little.

    The care of our animals was one of the most important duties in the American in th expendentionay force. On November 1, 1918, there were in operation 15 veterinary hospitals throughout the different areas of the American Expeditionary Forces, but not all construction had been completed.
  • Britain

    Britain and France sought to take the offensive, while Germany defended the occupied territories. Soon after the outbreak of hostilities, Britain began a naval blockade of Germany. Britain mined international waters to prevent any ships from entering entire sections of ocean, causing danger to even neutral ships.
  • Army

    A young man in his 20s, he had reclaimed the land by personally collecting dozens of unexploded mortars, grenades, and shells, some containing still lethal poison gas, which the army took away and detonated.
  • kaiser

    The Kaiser, kings and other hereditary rulers all were removed from power. Kaiser Wilhelm II asked his cousin, Tsar Nicolas II, to suspend the Russian general mobilization. On 11 August he offered his resignation to the Kaiser, who refused it, replying, "I see that we must strike a balance.
