Trench Foot
Trench warfare was a new form of war. It was meant to keep the soldiers safe when at war. Soldiers lived in these trenches. Soldiers who were fighting often got trench foot. This was the result of feet being wet for too long. Trenchfoot killed 2,000 Americans and 75,000 British soldiers. -
Submarines
The first submarine was designed and created by a Dutch engineer, Cornelis Drebbel in 1620. It was mostly a modified and covered rowboat. Submarines were used during WWI by the German. They had created their own submarines and had twelve when the war broke out in 1914. They used unrestricted submarines during the war to sink ships carrying merchandise for the Allied Powers. During the war, German submarines sank 6,394 ships. -
Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
On June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were shot and killed by Bosnian Serb. This started the war. He was shot because Austria- Hungary had angered Serbia. This all happen because Serbia believed the territories in Africa should belong to them rather than Austria- Hungary. -
Germany Invades Belgium
Germany invaded Belgium on their way to attack France on August 4, 1914. This resulted in the British joining the war. -
New Technology
WWI introduced a new form of war called trench warfare. In April of 1915, the poisonous gas was introduced by the Germans but was later used by both sides. Later gas masks were introduced and became a part of soldier uniforms. Britain the introduced tanks in 1916. At first they were easy to take down but then they became more advanced. -
Lusitania Was Sunk
On May 7, 1915 a German submarine, killing 1200 passengers, 128 of them being American. This sparked anger to the U.S. that was neutral at the time but did not lead them to get involved in the war. Although the U.S. took it as a terrorist act. Woodrow Wilson, the president of the U.S at the time, refused to get involved in the war. -
Poison Gas
During WW1 there were three poisonous gases that were invented. The three gases were Chlorine Gas, Phosgene Gas, and Mustard Gas. Phosgene gas was invented on December 19, 1915, by the German. -
Tanks
WW1 introduced many new weapons including tanks. There were a total of 26 tanks that were used during the war. The first one was introduced by the British. Although the first one went only 2 miles per hour, improvements were later made and played a big role during war. Till this day, tanks are continuing to be used at war. -
Blood Banks
The first blood bank was started in 1917 during World War 1 to save the lives of soldiers who were injured and had lost a lot of blood. It was started by Captain Oswald Johnson, a US Army doctor. Sodium citrate was used to keep the blood useable and was kept on ice until needed for surgeries. -
USA Gets Involved
The United States got involved on April 2, 1917. This happen because Arthur Zimmerman, a German official, sent a letter to a German ambassador in Mexico. He asked him to make a deal with the Mexico leader. The deal was to join Germany and keep the US busy so they would not interfere in Europe. When America found out about this, they were angered. Then Germany sank 6 american merchant ships with unrestricted submarines, American was forced to join the war. -
Certification of Navy Service
Lucius Byron Nash was in the Navy during WW1. This was his certificate indicating that he was in the Navy. He served for the USS Roanoke. Lucious was a Lutendient Junior Grade. -
T.N.T. Poem for Kaiser Bill
Lucius wrote a poem call T.N.T. for Kaiser Bill in 1918. The poem is deep because it talks about people dying and examples of ways people died at war. It similar to "Ten Little Monkeys". -

Letters to Parents
Lucius wrote to his family very often. He has a total of thrity four letter to his parents that are documented. In his letters he often described the conditions as dirty. He explained how he had to work very hard and has 12 hour shifts. -
Letter To Father
On July 1, 1918, Lucius wrote his father a letter about how he would be celebrating the 4th of July. He mentions that they would covering the boat in flags and making it seem as much as the 4th as possible. He also says that hopefully for his father’s next birthday, he will be closer to him and the war will be over. -
War Service Chevron
Lucius Nash was on a United States Navy boat when he received a letter allowing him to wear a War Service Chevron. This shows how Navy member's every move were completely controlled and they had little control over themselves. -
Treaty of Versailles
WW1 was ended with the Treaty of Versailles. The treaty blamed Germany for the war and made them pay for reparations. The treaty was signed on June 28, 1919. It also re-assigned German boundaries.
