    Assasination of Franz Ferdinand
    While riding in the motorcade through the streets of Sarajevo on 28 June, Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were shot and killed by Gavrilo Princip, a Bosnian member of the Black Hand.
    The assassination provided Austria-Hungary with an excuse to take action against Serbia. During July 1914 the situation escalated, pulling in the major European powers via the complex alliance relationships each had struck up with one another. The result was world war.

At one point the British thought the Germans defense to be completely weakened and ordered their troops to walk towards german trenches, this was a fatal move, ending thousands of lives It is considered to be the worst battle of the First World War for the British, with about 60,000 casualties in the first day alone and over 350,000 by the end.

    America entered World War One on April 6th, 1917. Up to that date, America had tried to keep out of World War One – though she had traded with nations involved in the war – but unrestricted submarine warfare, introduced by the Germans on January 9th, 1917, was the primary issue that caused Woodrow Wilson to ask Congress to declare war on Germany on April 2nd. Four days later, America joined World War One on the side of the Allies.

A group led by Vladimir Lenin, the Bolsheviks, overthrew the government, created a communist government and pulled out of war

    The last day of World War One was November 11th 1918, known as Armistice Day. After three days of intense negotiations in a rail siding just outside of Compiegne, the German delegation that had been brought to the personal carriage of Marshall Ferdinand Foch was ordered by its government in Berlin to sign any terms put on the table by the Allies. in berlin, people had taken to the streets over chronic food shortages, there were many social issues.

    The Treaty of Versailles was the peace settlement signed after World War One had ended in 1918 and in the shadow of the Russian Revolution and other events in Russia. The treaty was signed at the vast Versailles Palace near Paris - hence its title - between Germany and the Allies. The three most important politicians there were David Lloyd George, Georges Clemenceau and Woodrow Wilson.
