Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were assainted. Franz Ferdinand was very unpopular because he made it clear that he would make changes once he became Emperor. Franz had three children and a wife Sophie. A Serbain nationalist student, Gavrilo Princip, assainated Franz Ferdinand and his wife, when thier open car stopped at a corner on its way out of the town. -
Austria declares war on Serbia
The Austrian Government declares war on Serbia. One month exactly after Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assinated. The Austraian Government blamed the Serbian government for the assassination of Franz Ferdinand and his wife and declared war on Serbia. This effectively begun the First World War. -

Germany declared war on France
Germany declared war on France. German troops poured into Belgium as directed under the Schleiffen Plan which was a plan drawn up by the German General Von Schleiffen in 1905 that proposed Germany invading France via Belgium in the event of a Russian attack on Germany. It had a timetable of 6 weeks, which would leave 2 weeks for the German army to be transferred east and be in position to fight against the Russians. Plenty of time,as Germany had an excellent railway system. -
The Schleiffen Plan
The Germans declared war on France and implemented their invasion of Belgium, part of their Scheifflen Plan. The Plan was intended to bring about a swift victory for Germany in the event of a two-front war. It concentrated on exploiting the differences in the amount of time neighboring countries would need to prepare for war. The Belgium army was swept aside easily enough, however, the French held off the German forces. With the failure of the Schleiffen Plan, trench warfare ensued. -

The British successfully landed a number of marines in the Gallipoli region of the Dardenelles. Unfortunately the success of landing these ships did not follow up and the mission was a failure. -

The Battle of Gallipoli took place on the Gallipoli peninsula now Gelibolu in modern day Turkey, a combined British and French operation was made to capture the Ottoman capital of Constantinople and secure a sea route to Russia. The battle ended when the final troops left on the 9th of January, 1916. -

The allies had successfully pushed the Turkish army back and were forced to ask for an armistice. The terms of the armistice treaty allowed the allies access to the Dardenelles and Bosporus. -

There was revolution in Germany in November. The army did nothing to uphold the monarchy, so Kaiser ll fled to the Netherlands and got abdicated. -
War Ended
After the Germans had signed the Armistice World War 1 came to an end. The leaders of both sides held a meeting in Ferdinand Foch's railway carriage headquarters at Compiegne. The official date and time of the end of WW1 was 11.00 am on the 11th day of the 11th month. This is known as Armistice Day.
