  • Archduke Franz Ferdinand assassinated

    Archduke Franz Ferdinand assassinated
    June 28th 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand was sent to Bosina's capital of Sarajevo. This was to demonstrate the Empires imperial ruling. Once there a a Black Hand member, Gavrilo Princip. Shot down both Ferdinand and his wife. This event was important to history because this led to "Chain Reactions" which within a month led to world war 1
  • Schieffen Plan

    Schieffen Plan
    On 2nd August 1914, the German army invaded Luxembourg and Belgium according to the Schlieffen Plan.The Germans were held up by the Belgium army, Russia mobilised in just 10 days and Germany was forced to withdraw troops from the Schlieffen Plan to defend her eastern border.
    In the long run is plan that was suppose to work had many flaws and didnt work.
  • Britain declares war on Germany

    Germany invaded the neutral nation of Belgium and since Britain had agreed to help Belgium if invaded by another nation, In turn this made Britain declare war
    The importance to of this was that Canada was put automatically to war

    This Act was passed so that the government could do anything and everything that they saw fit, in order to protect Canada.
    This event was important because it did allow goverment to defend the welfare of Canada

    New Technology
    With the constant need for new weapons the way war was fought had drastically changed since the 20th century, Now with such new high tech it was suicidal to even run across open ground. Machine guns new to war could be fired at unbelivable speeds.. After tanks where brought in to try and protect the soldiers from being shot down in open grounds.Before the tanks Hundreds of thousands of men where shot down and slaughtered on either sides. This event maked the new era of technology

    Submarines became a huge disadvantage to the Britains as the Main purpose of the submarines where suprise. They would take out the supplise ships, and the men on deck.Canadas merchant marine played a huge part in the war by doing the dangerous work of bring food and supplies to the Britain. Many ships where taken down in the Atlantic
    This event made clear that they would need to upgrade to a technology strong enought to seek out the Uboats
  • The Second Battle of Ypres

    French and Canadian troops where sent to fight in the Belgain town of Ypres. The battles that happened around these areas where some of the bloodiest fought yet. The Germans used chlorine gas for the first time' a tactic long since out lawed.
    The importance to this is that more then 6000 Canadian soldiers where killed,wounded or captured.

    The role of women in Canada was especially affected by World War I,Women were also required to encourage their husbands and sons to enlist in the military. In many countries the need for female participation in the First World War was seen as almost necessary. Once men went off to war woman had to take up working mens jobs.
    The importance of this is that before war womans right and options for work where slim. After the war woman got rights to vote.

    World War 1 trenches were dirty, smelly and filled with diseases. For soldiers life in the trenches meant living in fear. In fear of diseases like cholera and trench foot and of the constant fear of enemy attack.
    This event in history made many Canadians lose there lives and suffered psychological disorders and nervous breakdowns
  • The Battle of Somme

    The Battle of Somme
    Allies launched a massive attack against a line of German trenches near the Somme River. There as heavy loss on the first day but the battle still continued. Nearly 58,000 Britian troops where killed.
    Importace in this event was that even though almostg 24,000 Canadians where killed. They still distinguised themselves and were brought in to a lead assaults in many other major battles
  • Supporting the war effort

    In 1917 the Canadian government intoduced income tax. A measure that was only suppose to be temporary. Families had to pay a tax of between 1 and 15 percent of their tottal income.
    This event that was only suppose to stay till the war ended has still made its way to the 21st centurary
  • The Battle of Vimy Ridge

    Vimy Ridge was a key to the German defence system,all four divisions of the Canadian Corps attacked.The Battle of Vimy Ridge was part of the Allies' effort to push the Germans out of France.
    This event marks the first time that Canadian divisions attacked together, there success gave them a sense of national pride
  • Passchendaele

    Passchendaele
    On November 6, the Canadians and British launched the assault to capture the ruined village of Passchendaele itself. The Canadians attack on November 10 and cleared the Germans from the eastern edge of Passchendaele Ridge. The "victory" resulted in more then 200,000 casualties on each side, including more then 15,000 Canadians. This battles importance is that the Canadian soldiers succeeded in the face of almost unbelievable challenges.

    During the war Halifax as a valuable base for refuelling and repairing Allied warships. . SS Mont-Blanc, a French cargo ship fully laden with wartime explosives, collided with the Norwegian vessel in the Narrows, Approximately twenty minutes later, a fire on board the French ship ignited her v cargo, causing a cataclysmic explosion that devastated the Richmond District of Halifax. Approximately 2,000 people were killed and nearly 9,000 people injuried. This event left many people rethinking war
  • Paris Peace Conference

    Paris Peace Conference
    The Paris Peace Conference was an event the like of which we will never see again. It brought together some of the most powerful people in the world for six months. As they talked, debated, agreed and disagreed, they got to know each other in a way that few leaders have time for today. In doing so it created the League of Nations
