  • Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand (event)

    The assassination of the archduke started that strife against Serbia and Austria which would eventually lead to the beginning of alliances and potentially war.
  • Austria declares war (event/alliance)

    On this day, Austria rejected Serbia's offers and declared war. Also, Serbia had an alliance with Russia, and Russia began to take action.
  • Schlieffen Plan (strategy)

    General Alfred Graf von Schlieffen wanted to attack France and then Russia meaning a two front war. Schlieffen made a plan that one part of the German army would go west to fight France and the other part of the army would go east to fight Russia.
  • Attack of the Marne River

    The Allies attacked the Germans in the valley of the Marne River. Every soldier was sent to fight. The Germans were eventually pushed back 60 miles by the Allies. The Allies win took down the Schlieffen Plan.
  • Battle of Limanowa

    Russia had beat the Austrians twice already and not until December did the Austrians with the help of the Germans turn that around. In this battle Austria pushed Russia east and then later pushed them out of Austria-Hungary.This battle was known as the Battle of 17 days.
  • Gallipoli campaign

    British, Austrailian, New Zealand,and French troops assaulted many times on the Gallipoli peninsula. The fight was another stalemate.
  • Attack of Verdun

    300,000 men were killed on both sides during the attack of the French by the Germans. The British tried to help relieve the French but 20,000 of their soldiers were killed. This was during a huge slaughtering of about half a million deaths.

    The Battle at Somme River

    The British were trying to relieve pressure on the French. During the first battle at the Somme River, more than 20,000 British soldiers were killed. By the end of the whole battle there were half a million soldiers killed.
  • Unrestricted Submarine Warfare

    Germany decided to make their own naval station around Britain. Germans would sink any ship around the British waters with their submarines without any warning and this was called unrestricted submarine warfare.
  • US enters war

    When the Zimmerman note was leaked to all people the Americans wanted war on Germany. The note made everyone mad and on April 2nd, President Woodrow Wilson told Congress to declare war. The US was with the Allies.
  • Russia pulls from war

    Since 5.5 million Russian soldiers were killed they refused to fight in the war anymore. In 1918, since they wouldn't fight Germany and Russia signed a treaty (the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk) and resulted in the end of the war between them.
  • Second Battle of Marne

    The Allies and Germans began the Second Battle of Marne. Allies had tanks that ran through the Germans and with the arrival of many American troops the Allies began to move towards Germany. The Central Powers began to fall and Germany was getting beat bad. Kaiser Wilhelm II stepped down and made Germany a republic.
  • War Ends

    A representative from the German government and Marshal Foch met in a railway car near Paris where they signed an agreement to stop the war. On the 11th the war was officially at its end.
