Archduke Franz Ferdinand's assassination
Ferdinand was king if the Austria-Hungary which was strong empire in the center of the Europe. Ferdinand was assissnated by serbian men. Month after his assassination, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. -
Joining Sides
At the time when king Ferdinand was assassinated, countries in Europe wanted more power and lands. So,when the war between Austria-hungary started, all the countries in Europe started joining the war chosing sides with their allied countries. There were two sides which were Allied Powers and Central Powers. Allied Powers contained France, Belgium, Russia, great Britain and Serbia. Central Powers contained Austria-Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria and Ottoman Empire. -

The Battle of the Somme
Battle of the Somme was battle between German armies and French armies. It begsn when France attacked Germany in 1916. Germans used machineguns which were very effective to the France but France had Trench warfare which was figting up close in the line.The battle was unpredictable because neither side were winning. Battle of Somme took months until both sides lost lots of soldiers. As result, allies gained less than 10km of land and over million people were injured and killed. -
U.S joining the war
Woodrow Wilson who was president of U.S didn't wanted to join the war. He thought it was European conflict so he didnt want to join war. But, U.S was forced to join the war because there were 2 reasons. First, on May 7th, 1915, a German submarine sank a Brithish ship and killed about 100 American citizens. Second, in Feburary 1917, Zimmermann Telegram was discovered. Germanay was asking Mexico to join the war. If they joined the war, Germany promised Mexico to help get Southern part of U.S. -
U.S joining the war-2
Also, Russia had to get out of the war because of Russian Revolution. So, U.S entered the war on April 6th, 1917 in the side of Allied Powers. Congress passed the Selective Service Act which was all American mans from ages of 21 through 31 had to fight for U.S. U.S gathered 3 million soldiers to fight. Most of U.S soldiers fought in France which made German armies push back. -
End of World War 1
On November 11th, 1918, Germany agreed to Armistice or stop fighting. The treaty of Versailles made Germany to pay 3.3billion dollors to all the Allied Powers. President of Germany comlained that it was too much to pay but they were forced to pay the money because it was Germany's fault. This led to World War 2 by Germany.
