The British imposed the Stamp act to the colonies. Parliament taxed the people of the colonies because they needed money to pay the soldiers defending their territory. -
1766
The stamped act was reapealed ending the immediate crisis but the dispute was not solve after the repeal of the stamp act. -
1774
The members of the colonies wanted to take action and organiz a militia against the British soldiers. The colonist were angered for enforcing taxes on them without anyone representing them in parliament. -
1776
The second continental congress was held. At this continental congress Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. On this day the American Revolution had formally begun. -
1778
The French granted diplomatic recognition to the United States after a British defeat. When Spain and Dutch Republic entered the war, the British faced war in America and Europe. -
1787
Delegates met in Philadelphia at the constitutional convention to revise the Articles of Confederation. Instead the delegates decided to make a new government. -
1781
General Cornwallis was forced to surrender under the French and American army at Yorktown. With that defeat British decided to end the war. -
1783
The American and British leaders signed the Treaty of Paris which Britain and the rest of the world recoganized the independence of the United States. It also granted the Americans control of the western territory from the Appalachians to the Mississippi River.
