The Stamp Act
Parliament imposed this act on colonies. Required some printed materials like legal documents and newspapers to carry a stamp showing a tax had been paid to Britain. Lead to lots of opposition. King George III was the British ruler at the time. -
First Continental Congress
The First Continental Congress met up in Philadelphia. People attending urged fellow colonists to create militias. Among the delegates that attended, George Washington was there. -
Second Continental Congress
Held in Philadelphia, this is when the Declaration of Independence by Thomas Jefferson was approved. This is when the American revolution official began. -
The Battle of Saratoga
Colonists defeated Burgoyne's British Troops. This battle is considered the turning point in the war, and influenced France, Spain, and the Netherlands to enter the war for the Americans. -
Yorktown
General Cornwallis was forced to surrender to the American and French troops at Yorktown. This led to the British ending the war. -
Treat of Paris
This Treaty Recognized American Colonies independence. It also granted control of the western territory from the Appalachians to the Mississippi River to America. It was signed by representatives of America and Britain, such as Benjamin Franklin, John Jay, John Adams, William Temple, and Henry Laurens. -
The Constitution Signing
The Constitution granted citizens basic human rights and set up the national government and law for the USA. Delegates from each state signed the constitution, including George Washington and James Madison. -
End of Slavery
Slavery didn't technically stop in the U.S. until 1865 when Abraham Lincoln ended it.
