Caesar is elected to be a prominent official
By having this position in the government caesar was able to rise in power quickly which led to his conquering of rome. This is basically the first stepping stone in Caesar's military and political career. -

The Triumvirate Begins to Fall
After the death of ally Crassus, Caesar and Pompey begin to fight over land and power within Rome, causing a civil war between the two. Caesar wins this war a year later, becoming the sole ruler of the land that they had conquered. -

Upon winning in the war against Pompey Caesar was named dictator for life, and gained a lot of control over Rome. He proceeded to change the empire socially and politically. -

Many of his allies and colleagues disagreed with the way Caesar ruled. So, they decided to end their problem by killing him. The ones who did it most directly were allegedly is close friends.
