  • Minamata disaster

    May 1956- The Minamata disaster was a pollution-related health crisis. It caused difficulty running/walking, changes in voice, difficulty seeing, hearing & swallowing, convulsions, coma & death.
  • Valdivia earthquake

    1960, this earthquake killed around 1,655 people. It injured 3,000 people and all the damage from it caused 550 million dollars to recover from the damage

    1960, the clearing of the forest has been very rapid. Around 4,200 square kilometers were cleared by 1978. It increases as the years go on.

  • Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring Published

    September 1962- Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring was published on September 27, 1962. The book makes known the negative effects that man-made pesticides inflict on the environment.
  • Clean air act

    1963 they regulated air emission from stationary as well as mobile sources.
  • Rat islands earthquake.

    April 2, 1965, this was a very strong earthquake with a magnitude of 8.7. This earthquake was caused by a tsunami. About 1000 km long. It sent ash up into the earth atmosphere over several weeks.
  • US river fires.

    June 22, 1969, the fire was about 5 stories high and became in the early afternoon. It lasted around 20 minutes before firefighters were able to get it under control.
  • Endangered Species Act

    Year 1973- (ESA) Endangered Species Act, is a law that protects endangered and threatened species and their habitats. It is considered a model for conservation legislation.

  • Stockholm Conference

    5-16 June 1972, A conference by the United Nation on the Human Environment in Stockholm to talk about a major issue. They discussed air pollution, water, and all the oceans along with the wellbeing of the earth.

  • Love Canal

    From 1978 to 1982, 6,181 former LC residents were interviewed. In 1996, 725 deaths from 1979–1996 were identified in this cohort, using state and national registries. President Jimmy Carter approves emergency financial aid for the area so New York State can start buying the homes of 236 Love Canal families. The families are eventually relocated at a cost of $10 million. November 10: 200 tons of dioxin, a lethal chemical, are reported buried in the canal
  • Chernobyl meltdown

    1986, this was an accident that destroyed the Chernobyl 4 reactor. This incident killed 30 operators and firemen within just three months as time went on it caused more deaths. The steam from the explosion and fires had released about 5% of radioactive react core into our environment. It spread to a lot of areas in Europe.
  • Bhopal disaster

    2–3 December 1984, 45 tons of a very dangerous gas names methyl isocyanate escaped from the insecticide plant that had been owned by the Indian. It has killed around 15,00 and 20,000 people. Some things it caused to humans were eye irritation or blindness. Many people have been exposed to this harmful gas.

    1987, this was designed to stop production and an attempt to iimport the ozone depleting substances and they wanted to reduce their concentration that was in the atmosphere therefore it would help protect the earth's ozone layer.

    March 24, 1989, this spill had affected about 1,300 miles of shoreline. The spill had 11 million gallons of oil.

    11 December 1997, this was an international agreement that wanted to amie to reduce carbon dioxide emission and eliminate some of the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere to better the Earth.

    May 24, 2006.There was a U.S vice president named AI Gore he had the basis of his traveling lecture tour that had been on the emerging human challenge of global warming and climate change. It talked about the greenhouse effect and the changes in the atmospheric carbon dioxide and the changes thought-out the history of the Earth.

  • Deep water horizon oil spill

    April 20, 2010, a tank of oil down below the Gulf of Mexico exploded and sank. It killed 11 workers. 4 million barrels of the oil had flowed over an 87 day period.
  • California droughts

    2012, California has been getting dryer and dryer. From time to time the dryness gets so bad the smallest thing can cause the next fire. The hottest drought was recorded back in 2012-2016.
  • Clean power act

    August 2015, this set the very first limit on carbon pollution forms the U.S power plants. These were the largest sources of pollution to the earth's atmosphere.
