    Dante was a famous author during the Renaissance. He was an Italian philosopher and writer. He is best known for The Divine Comedy.

    The Black Death was passed along to humans from the fleas on rats. The infection followed trade routes causing between 75-200 million people die. It took 200 years to repopulate Europe because 50-60 percent of the population died.

    Printing Press Invented

    The Printing Press was invented in 1450 by Johannes Gutenberg. The first book that he ever printed on the Printing Press was the Bible in German.

    Martin Luther

    Martin Luther was a Catholic Monk who had issues of Faith and Works tied to salvation. After he decided that he didn't agree with the Catholic church anymore he wrote his 95 Thesis and nailed it to the door of the church. After he was excommunicated from the church he started Lutheranism. Lutheranism spread throughout Germany and Scandinavia and it was the first Protestant Religion.

    Henry VIII

    Henry VIII wanted a son but his wife could not give him one. The Pope wouldn't annul his marriage to Catherine, but he wanted to marry someone else to give him a son. So, during The Act of Supremacy, which took place in 1534, Henry VIII became the head of the Church of England. His doctrine was very close to Catholicism, but this religion allowed divorce. When a wife wouldn't conceive a son Henry VIII would kill them and marry someone else until he finally got a son.

    John Calvin

    John Calvin converted to Protestantism at the age of 25. He believed that the Catholic Church had fallen too far from the original Christian church. He believed in Predestination. Calvin set up a government in Geneva that was based upon his beliefs.

    Council of Trent

    Pope Paul III realized that Protestantism needed to be countered. So during the Council of Trent he looked at doctrine and practices and then tried to clarify it. He emphasized the teaching of doctrine to the young and to all Christians. Instead of unifying Christians, like he wanted, it emphasized their differences.
