    National Women's Trade Union League
    In 1903, the National Women's Trade Union League is formed. It advocated improved wages and working conditions for women.
  • Congressional Union/ National Women's Party

    Congressional Union/ National Women's Party
    Alice Paul and Lucy Burns form the Congressional Union. This group worked toward women's suffrage. Supporters picketed the White House. This group was later renamed to the National Women's Party.
  • Women's suffrage

    Women's suffrage
    On August 26th, 1920, the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution is signed into effect. This bill gave women the right to vote. It was signed into law by Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby.

    Mary McLeod Bethune forms the National Council of Negro Women. This group lobbied against racism and sexism in the workplace.

    Planned Parenthood
    Planned Parenthood Federation of America is formed. This group started as the American Birth Control League in 1921, formed by Margaret Sanger.

    Daughters of Bilitis
    The Daughters of Bilitis is formed. It is the first lesbian organization in the United States.
  • Equal Pay Act

    The Equal Pay Act is passed. This act made it illegal to pay a women less than what a man would be payed for the same job. This decreased discrimination in the workplace for women.

    The first marital rape law in passed in Nebraska making it illegal for a husband to rape his wife.
  • Meritor Savings Bank v. Vinson

    Meritor Savings Bank v. Vinson
    In Meritor Savings v. Vinson, the Supreme Court found that sexual harassment is a form of discrimination in the workplace.
  • United States v. Virginia

    United States v. Virginia
    In this Supreme Court case, the Supreme Court found that the all-male Virginia Military was required to admit women in order to recieve state funding. This set a precedence of public schools being open to both genders.

    In this Supreme Court case, the Supreme Court found that states can be sued in federal court for violations of the Family Leave Medical Act.
