Lewis and Clark Expedition
Sacagawea was the only women to accomany the 33 men on the expedition. Her husband was hired to act as an interpreter, and it was understood that she would go along with the expedition to act as an interpreter of the Shoshone language, she was 16 and pregnant at the time. -
The Cult of Domesticity
The new ideal of womenhood. Men went out and made money and provieded for the family and women stayed home and taught the children how to be proper citizens. -
Patents
Mary Kies was the first woman to recieve a patent for a technique of weaving straw with silk and thread. -
Dolly Madison
During the war of 1812, first lady Dolly Madison refused to leave the white house until the Gilbert Stuart painting of George Washington was saved and until she personally brought the Decleration of Independence out. -
Womens Rights
The first Women's Rights convention in Seneca Falls in july of 1848. This meeting was influential in Women's rights for the future. -
Susan B. Anthony
Susan B. Anthony arrested for trying to vote. The trial that followed her voting gave her an opportunity to share her message of women's sufferage. -

Clara Barton establishes the American Red Cross. -
Right to Vote?
U.S House of Representatives rejects a proposal to give the right to vote to women. -
19th Amendment
Women gain the right to vote through the 19th Amendment. The amendment was actually drafted in 1878 (41 years earlier) but wasn't ratified by the states until the 1920s. -
Amelia Earhart
Amelia Earhart makes the first trans-Atlantic flight bt a woman. She was the first woman to recieve the U.S. Distinguished Flying Cross. She also set many records and wrote a book. -
Frances Perkins
Frances Perkins was the first women to serve in the cabinet. She served as the Labor Secretary. -
Amelia Earhart
Amelia Earhart makes the first solo flight across the Pacific Ocean. Not only the first flight made by a woman, but the first flight made by anyone. -
Equal Rights?
In 1972 the equal rights amendment was defeated. The ERA was passed in both houses of congress, but it failed to recieve the requisite number of ratifications before the madated date by congress. -
Roe v Wade
Roe v Wade made abortion legal in the United States. The decision held that a woman, with her doctor could decide to abort in the earlier months of pregnancy. -
Breakthrough in Tennis.
Billie Jean King beats Bobby Riggs in a tennis match. The game between King and Riggs became known as "The Battle of the Sexes". -
Sandra Day O'Connor
Sandra Day O'Connor was nominated to become the first woman on the Suprem Court. -

Sally Ride becomes the first woman in space. -
Geraldine Ferraro
As VP Geraldine Ferraro was the first woman to run on a major party ticket. -

Dr. Antonia Novello becomes the first woman Surgeon General. -
