WOMEN VOTING (YAE 9B)

  • PORTUGAL

    With restrictions in 1911, it was later illegal again, until 1931 when it was re-gained by women but with restrictions. The restrictions (other than age requirements) were lifted in 1976.
  • BELGIUM

    Women were granted the right to vote by the constitution. It became a constitutional amendment for women to vote after varios disputes and talks. They were only granted communal voting. It was until 1848 that women were able to vote both for the provincial councils and the national parliament.
  • UNITED STATES

    Before the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920, states had passed legislation that allowed women to vote in different types of elections; some only allowed women to vote in school or municipal elections and some territories gave full suffrage to women, only to take it away once they became states. Black women were effectively denied voting rights until 1965.
  • TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO

    Both men and women received the right to vote in 1925, men could vote at the age of 21 while women had to be 30. This was wen Trinidad and Tobago was a colony still. In 1945 women finally received their full suffrage.
  • SOUTH AFRICA

    Women from the European and Asian cultures were granted the right to vote in 1030. It was not until 1994 that all women could vote as well as all men from a ll kinds of races.
  • BULGARIA

    Married women gained the right to vote on 18 January 1937 in local elections, but could not be running for office. Single women were not given the right to vote. Women finally gained suffrage by the Communist Regime in September 1944 which was reaffirmed by an electoral law reform on 15 June 1945.
  • EL SALVADOR

    Women obtained in 1939 the suffrage with restrictions, it required literacy and a higher age. All restrictions were taken out in 1950 allowing women to vote, but women obtained the right to stand for elections only in 1961.
  • ARGENTINA

    On September 23, 1947 the Female Enrollment Act was written under the government of Juan Perón. This after varios problems deciding weather or not to give women the suffrage.
  • TAIWAN

    In 1945, Taiwan was returned from Japan to China. In 1947, women won the suffrage under the Constitution of the Republic of China. This allowed all Chineese women to vote in all circumstances.
  • NAMIBIA

    Namibia had women vote since its independence from South Africa. It is in the constitution.
