Irene Murdoch Event
From 1968-78 Irene Murdoch went to court continuously and was told that she had to claim to her marital land even though her parents paid for it. Instead she would receive a support cheque from her ex-husband every month. The court's decision outraged many women in Canada and inspired a revolution that lead to Canada’s acknowledgment of marriage as an equal partnership. -
The Royal Commision.
In 1970 the royal commision made a report about the rights of women in Canada and made 167 recommendations for the government -
Aboriginal women are granted the right to marry off of reserves.
~Government’s acknowledgment of marriage as an equal partnership in the year 1978 and allowed Aboriginal women to marry off the reserve -
Right for first nations women to marry non-native men.
~The section of the Indian Act depicting the laws against women marrying non-native men, was repealed in the year 1985 -
Women continue to fight for equality!
~Women all around the globe continue to fight for equal rights and pay to this very day.
