    The Feminine Mystique is published
    This book published by Betty Friedan is credited with starting second wave feminism in the U.S. along with the Womens Liberation Movement. The book described that Women had societal pressure to be housewifes and to stay housewifes. Betty Friedan is a main contributor to the movement because she spearheaded the idea that Women aren't just wifes and baby makers, they are people and deserve the same life that men had at the time. The movement fought for equality in education, pay and Women's rights

    The Equal Pay Act is passed by Congress, allowing for equal pay, regardless of the race, color, or gender of the worker. This helped accomplished one of the problems that the movement was fighting for, pay discrimination

  • NOW is formed

    NOW is formed
    The National Organization for Women is one of the first and largest Women organizations. It was created by Betty Friedan, Muriel Fox, Shirley Chisholm and Pauli Murray. The organization was not very successful in its early years and focused on employment discrimination, equal education, maternity leave and other discriminatory problems that Women faced.

    Shirley Chisholm was one of the founders of NOW. She was an advocate for Women and African American rights. In 1968 she was the first african american woman to be elected into congress. This was a huge victory for her, NOW and African Americans.

    Betty Friedan lead a national strike that showed in many ways how Women were being discriminated against. She wanted to show that women were seen everywhere in domestic labor while men were not. It was the largest rally since the Women's suffrage movement.

    Roe v Wade decision
    The court found anti abortion laws to be unconstitutional. This was also a huge victory for the movement as abortion and contraceptive were seen as Women's rights. Abortion was now safer and more accessible to Women.

  • Pauli Murray

    Pauli Murray
    Pauli Murray was an african american woman who helped to create NOW. She was a law student at Yale and in 1977 was the first african american woman to be ordained by the Protestant Episcopal Church. She helped to fight for the Women's Liberation Movement aloging with advocating for african american rights.
