US Wind Engine Company is established
Daniel Halladay and John Burnham start the U.S. Wind Engine Company and build the Halladay Windmill, which is designed for the landscape of the American West. -
The first windmill was invented
The first windmill was invented by Charles F Brush in Cleveland Ohio. Windmills used to be used to generate electricity to remote country's and places. Nowadays when wind pasts the windmills, it generates electricity for things like homes and businesses. Some people like windmills so much that they create 'wind farms' where they put lots of windmills together on a farm to generate a lot of electricity. -
Wind turbine test begins
Scientist Poul la Cour begins his wind turbine tests in a bid to bring electricity to the rural population of Denmark. In 1903, Poul la Cour founded the Society of Wind Electricians and in 1904 the society held the first course in wind electricity. La Cour was the first to discover that fast rotating wind turbines with fewer rotor blades were most efficient in generating electricity production. -
Steel blades for windmills are invented
The invention of steel blades for windmills makes them more efficient and as homesteaders move west, more than six million windmills are erected throughout the countryside. -
Wind power is showcased at the Worlds Fair
The Chicago World’s Fair showcases 15 windmill companies and their wind turbine designs. -
Jacobs wind factory is opened
Joe and Marcellus Jacobs open the Jacobs Wind factory, producing wind turbine generators. The generators are used on farms to charge batteries and power lighting. -
First wind farm is built
The world's first windfarm consisting of 20 turbines is built in New Hampshire. The windfarm however, is a failure as the turbines break down and the developers overestimate the wind resource. -
NASA Scientists Developed Method to Predict Turbine Performance
Space Administration scientists Larry Viterna and Bob Corrigan develop “The Viterna Method,” which becomes the most common method used for predicting wind turbine performance, thus increasing the efficiency of turbine output to this day. -
National wind technology center built
The National Wind Technology Center (NWTC) is built to be the nation's premier wind energy technology research facility. The NWTC continues to help industry reduce the cost of energy so that wind can compete with traditional energy sources. -
The UK's first offshore windfarm is opened
The UK's first offshore windfarm is opened. North Hoyle offshore windfarm is located 7-8km off the north Wales coast between Prestatyn and Rhyl. -
Wind vision report released
Building off of the 2008 20% Wind Energy by 2030 initiative, the Wind Vision Report is released showing that 35% wind energy is possible by 2050. -
