This bill aimed to outlaw slavery in territories taken from Mexico. The bill passed in the House of Representatives but was defeated in the Senate thus causing a division in Congress. Although, not success it led to the formation of Free Soil Party. -
Compromise
California could not gain statehood. Many people were tried of regional bickering. Stephen A. Douglas won the plan. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
The conflict between the North and South bring blood shed to the West. Douglas divided the two territories to Nebraska and Kansas. The states are seperated because one side dosen't believe in slavery. -
Bleeding Kansas
Pro -slavery and antislavery rush to Missouri to vote for the territorial legislature. About 5,000 Americans voted illegaly. The anti slavery treated this with rage. -
Caning of Sumner
Sumner caused a lot of violence to spread. Sumner's speech was packed with insults towards the people. Sumner made a lot of people mad, ecspecially the Senator of Southern California. -
Dred Scott v. Sandford
Dred Scott had been a slave in Missouri. His owner took him to places where slavery was illegal. Later, his master died and he was sued for freedom. -
Attack on Harpers Ferry
John Brown wanted to inspire slaves to fight for freedom. He stole and captured weapons from Harpers Ferry. Later, he was hanged for this rebellion act. -
Election of 1860
Lincoln is elected president in 1860. During his presidency, he opposed the expansion of slavery. Lincoln beats Douglas in the North when he got elected.
